A new variant of the Porsche 911 arrived for the 1975 model year that broke new ground for all road cars alike. With the 911 Turbo 3.0 – or 930, as it was internally referred to – Porsche pioneered the use of turbocharging technology in production vehicles. A type of forced induction, turbocharged engines utilise exhaust flows to deliver increased pressures of clean air into the combustion process to create immense additional power. Until the 911 Turbo, this technology was applied only in motorsport, being regarded as impossible to ‘tame’ for road use with associated characteristics such as the drastic reduction of engine life expectancy, throttle sensitivity and capricious handling. Porsche applied its extensive experience in motorsport to solve these issues, ensuring boost pressure control via an exhaust bypass valve, and employing the internally vented disc brakes with aluminium brake callipers from the Porsche 917 race car. The 930 created the 911 Turbo an icon in its own right, a model that continues to be the benchmark for sports cars to this day.
To celebrate the 930, Porsche introduced the Limited Edition variant in 1989 exclusively for Great Britain. This special version of the 911 Turbo was limited to just 50 cars in total, and it featured various upgrades setting it apart from the standard model. In addition to a more powerful type 930/66 engine with 330bhp and a limited slip differential, the LE came as standard with “Sport Equipment” rear air intakes, an “Exclusive” front spoiler with integrated oil cooler which was specific to the model, painted wheel crests and a top tint windscreen. The interior specification included a 3-spoke steering wheel harking back to the original Turbo, shortened gear lever knob in leather with gold Porsche crest, hand brake gaiter in leather, Blaupunkt ‘Berlin’ radio/cassette player, alarm system, and a commemorative plaque in Gold.
In addition to the extensive optional extras the Limited Edition received as standard, our example was commissioned with extended side sills, sunroof, heated drivers and passenger seats, central style ‘B’ centre console, fold down under dash compartments with Porsche crests, additional amplifier, rear seat belts, and luggage compartment trimmed in black velour.
Presented today in exceptional condition throughout, our car comes accompanied by its original leather pouch containing the all-important guarantee and maintenance book, driver’s manual, Porsche dealer services directory and Blaupunkt owner’s manual. Further, this special example comes with its original spare keys, spare wheel, jack, tool roll and a dedicated history file containing service and maintenance invoices from October 1989 and MOTs from December 1992.
