What do you do when you have an abundance of Porsche RSs in stock? Well, you meticulously park them in formation and photograph the hell out of them, right?!
With the introduction of our latest arrival, our 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997.2) Clubsport we took the opportunity to look back at the Rennsport history, whilst bringing together 4 iconic RS models.
It was in 1972 when the first Rennsport title was handed to one of the most famous silhouettes in the automotive world today, the Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS (we’ve got something special we’ll be announcing soon too – hint is in the pictures!). With a total of 1,580 Porsche 911 2.7 RSs being built by the end of 1973, the popularity of the model firmly cemented the success of the RS on its first attempt.
When the production of the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS came to a close in 1974, RS fans had to wait 17 years for the next instalment, which came in the form of the 3.6 litre 964 RS. Whilst it had minimal increase in power, the ample weight saving and a more focussed suspension setup meant the car kept true to its Rennsport roots. In 1993, just two years after the second RS was released, a 3.8 litre 964 RSR offered a wild Turbo bodyshell along with 18-inch Speedline alloys.
In 1995, the 993 Carrera RS brought to the market a raw driving experience along with head-turning looks and was the last of the air-cooled RSs. It wasn’t until nearly a decade after the 993 Carrera RS that Porsche made the decision to retitle the ‘Carrera’ name, replacing it with ‘GT’, which led to the introduction of the 996 GT3 RS and its more period-inspired livery of white with red or white with blue colour options.
At the time of its release in 2010, the Porsche 997 GT2 RS was the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche and today still remains the fastest, most powerful 911 with a manual gearbox ever produced. Its renowned performance was down to its power-to-weight ratio of an incredible 451 bhp/ton 0.33 Kw/Kg, recognised to be the best in its class. It delivers a whopping 612 bhp and 700 Nm (516 lb·ft) of torque, a weight saving of 70kg over the standard GT2 along with the added benefit of different turbochargers, improved intercoolers, pistons and an upgraded engine management system.
The car we present for sale is 1 of only 19 UK supplied examples and is car number 314 of just 500 cars ever produced.
A facelifted version of the Gen 1 variant, the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Gen 2 offered all of the Rennsport DNA; simple visual enhancements with the more prominent changes consisting of slightly firmer suspension and better aerodynamics. It also provides an upgraded interior, a revised Porsche Communication Management System (PCM 3) and perhaps more importantly the 3.6L flat-six engine found in the older model was replaced by a new 3.8L flat-six, which resulted in a power increase to 444bhp, which was 35 additional horsepower over the Gen 1. It was also fitted with a titanium rear muffler and exhaust tip, as well as a lithium-ion battery to save weight, meaning it weighed in at 11lbs lighter than its predecessor and with the result of its weight savings, additional power and improved gearing the Gen 2 can deliver a tremendous 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds, a 100mph in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 193mph!
